IMDb (an acronym for Internet Movie Database) is an online database of information related to films, television programs, home videos, video games, and streaming content online – including cast, production crew, personal biographies, plot summaries, trivia, ratings, fan, and critical reviews.

IMDb.com is a "who's who" guide in the profession. It lists productions and those involved in a particular project and then ranks them in their category. One of the categories ranked is actors. Many casting directors, directors, producers, and filmmakers use the score to help them decide who to hire. It tracks your credits and gives you a STARMETER SCORE.

This is why a STARMETER SCORE has become essential to many actors and decision-makers. The lower the score, the better. For example, the #1 actor in Hollywood right now is ... Freya Allan, and when you click on this link, it only improves or helps her keep that score. That is because ranking is based on a complex algorithm.

Among other factors is the number of unique IP address clicks over time.

The average working actor will be a score of 60,000 up to about 30,000. So-called "B-list celebs" are at about 30,000 to 10,000. And "A-listers" will be in the top 10,000 to 1 range. Although some may argue this breakdown, this is consistent with what most agents, casting directors, directors, and filmmakers hold as the general standard.

There is a lot of controversy around the subject of scores because scores can be manipulated and don't necessarily reflect talent. For example, child reality star "honey boo boo" was #1 for quite some time. Why? Because she was all over the news and many people from around the world were looking her up.

Because of the "over time" aspect of the score, even beginning actors need to start thinking about this number early in their careers. Trust me; you will thank me later!

But Faith, I don't seem to have a score on this platform at all!! My name is not on there!

Don't worry. If you are just starting out, you might not yet be listed. It is ok. Productions are responsible for listing actors and other film professionals on IMDb.com under the project's title. Sometimes, the production leaves people off the list.

It is also possible that the projects you have done did not list their project on the platform. In this case, you can try listing the production yourself so that you can add your involvement. IMDb.com provides a simple way for you to do this, but you should be prepared and know as much detail about the production as possible because what you add will be authenticated by IMDb.com staff.

You should keep in mind that you can not add yourself as an actor if you don't yet have any projects listed on IMDb.com. You also can not list commercials.

STEPS TO IMPROVING YOUR SCORE

#1 - Know your score over time. I recommend that you start by looking up your score. To do this, you will need an IMDbPRO account, but before you run out and pay for it, think a little more strategically ... find out who you know that might already have an account and who can look it up for you. Once you know your score, you can track it over time and get a sense of what makes your score go up or down.

#2 Unapologetically post the number and your link to it to as many places as possible. Put it on your marketing materials such as business cards, websites, postcards, etc. You could create a QR code that links to your IMDB listing. To make this easier, IMDb.com offers a cool-looking graphic to help you promote yourself called a "Vanity Link." Best of all, the graphic is FREE, and no graphic design skills are needed.

#3 Set your computer's default home browser page to your IMDb page. HOW TO LINK Have friends and family set their default home browser page to your IMDB page. The more spread out and unique these hits are, the better, so think about who you might know in other regions and countries.

#4 The most obvious way to indirectly get hits is to list your involvement with popular film and television projects that get a lot of hits. For example, if you had a role in Game of Thrones, even a small role, will impact your score in a positive way. I usually do not recommend that actors list background on their resume but if you are just starting out, attaching yourself as a background actor to a high-profile project will very likely help your score.

#5 Add your IMDb.com page link to all your contact areas and bios such as Youtube, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, etc., and don't forget to include it in your email signatures and Linktree listings.

#6 Finally, list it in your press kit. Whether you have a professional publicist or are getting media and press coverage on your own, always include your IMDb.com details in your materials.

The final piece of advice that I have for you might surprise you and will even seem contradictory but, everything in this industry is about striking a balance. So, after you have done all of the above, I want you to forget about it. Every six months or so, check on your score to see if you can take steps to improve it, but then let it go.

This number does not define you as an actor. It is just marketing!

All acting is communication and what you are communicating is a lie. I call this type of lie the "entertainment lie."

Want to book more acting jobs?

The secret is in the LIE!

Rather than learning to act, learn how to lie in the most believable way possible.

Hello, my name is Faith Hibbs-Clark, and I am the Founder of The Communication Method for Actors, the only science-based film acting method of its kind in the world. I spent more than 20 years in the film and television industry as a casting director, working with producers, directors, and actors. I have seen this industry from every angle.

I am going to tell you a story. Before working in the entertainment industry, I was a deception detection expert. This means that I could read body language to see if someone was likely lying.

One day, I had a politician schedule a consultation with me. He had recently received negative feedback on a speech he had given and wanted me to coach him.

"I don't know why they didn't buy in," he said, "It was like they didn't believe me."

So, I asked him if what he was saying was entirely accurate? He went on to explain at length how it was "basically" true and how he didn't want to get into the full story at this juncture in his political career.

I felt like it was the easiest money I had ever made because I was charging by the hour, but the answer was simple. You will be believed when you tell the truth; your body will give you away when you don't.

Often, the people being lied to can't verbalize or put their finger on what it is that didn't add up in their minds. They will say they didn't get a good feeling about the person. People can sense body language even if they don't consciously recognize it.

That was not what the politician wanted to hear.

Body language reveals the truth about someone because the brain will send messages to the body to show what you are feeling. When you are "acting," that doesn't happen because it isn't really how you feel, it's just a script and fictional character that is not you.

When what someone says is "incongruent" with what their body language says, they will be perceived as dishonest.

As an actor, you want to feel like you are the character and be perceived as authentic and genuine in that portrayal. But how do you do this when what you are communicating is a lie?

Fortunately, there is a way! With a background in neuroscience and through years of research, I discovered a way to rewire your brain using "acting science" principles to trick your brain into believing the entertainment lie. You will feel and be perceived as more authentic. Best of all, these secrets are easy, and you can start putting them to work in your performances right away!

What is acting science?

The Communication Method for Actors uses scientific principles to enhance an actor's work. It is an outside-in approach that focuses more on how the actor is perceived than how the actor feels.

Unlike other acting methods, CMFA is less concerned with deep character immersion, back story, or drugging up old memories that are not sustainable and might not translate on screen.

The emphasis is on how the actor is perceived. Therefore, actors are encouraged to encode and reverse engineer their performances with body language and other neuroscience brain principles that will help evoke feelings in the receiver's mind.

For me, this is the very best way to book more roles...

By Faith Hibbs-Clark

It might surprise you to learn that science debunks the myth of anyone being naturally gifted.

Take, for example, Mozart. We generally regard him as a child musical prodigy because he was known to have perfect pitch – the ability to accurately name a musical note upon hearing it in isolation. Everyone assumed he was born with that skill and therefore was a child prodigy.

Now, I am going to reveal the truth about Mozart.

By today’s standards, Mozart would barely be noticed. Scientists now know that almost any child can learn perfect pitch if introduced to it between the ages of 3 and 5 years old and who have a strict regiment of training.

Now before we hang old Mozart out to dry, let me give you the truth of his success because you can use that secret yourself.

The truth is, Mozart was the son of a very accomplished musician and his dad had Mozart playing instruments before he was able to walk. His father had him on a strict regiment of intentional training that was results-driven.

Mozart wasn’t born great. He became great!

Science reveals that nobody is born with an innate ability to perform at an expert level, in any field. All exceptional performance has come from INTENTION DRIVEN PRACTICE.

Practicing with intention is not about the number of hours that you train but rather the quality of the training experience.

Remember what I taught you? The human brain is a series of neural pathways that form patterns that represent your experiences in life. Since we tend to follow the “path of least resistance” in our behaviors and follow the patterns of things we have done before and already know, it is important in your continued acting work that you reinforce patterns that get results. Patterns that cause us to excel.

The problem is that WE TEND TO REPEAT MISTAKES which makes bad habits hard to break.

That is why I always say, “Practice doesn’t make perfect, but perfect practice does.”

Again, It is not how many hours you train, but the quality of the training. But, don't just take my word for it.

Dr. Anders Ericsson, a leading expert in the science of expertise, explains that these things are most likely will determine excellence.

1. A desire to want to train

2. A teacher who is themselves excellent

3. Immediate & precise feedback for immediate correction

4. The ability to visualize what perfection looks like

5. The ability to leave your comfort zone.

The acting science that I teach as a part of my Communication Method for Actors program is not for everyone, because it is not easy. It is grounded, practical, and results-driven.

Ready to make results muscle memory?
